  4. We aren’t actually broke, and our debt situation is better than most European nations (if the numbers are being reported honestly). But the Republicans like to make a big fuss over the debt and the deficit whenever a Democrat is in the White House. When we have a Republican president, no problem.

    You’re right about going bankrupt. When Reagan was president, the Republicans talked about “starving the beast.” The idea was that if you saddle the country with a huge debt, there will be no money to spend on social programs. That would limit the power of the government. It never occurred to them that it would also limit what they could spend on police and military operations. I don’t think they quite understand that even now.
